オニヒトデ退治

みなさん「オニヒトデ」ご存知ですか？？サンゴ礁に生息する大型のヒトデで大きいものは直径５０センチ以上なります。サンゴを餌とするオニヒトデは時に大発生してサンゴ礁を食い荒らすので、サンゴ礁の環境保全上有害とされています。大発生のメカニズムはまだはっきり分かっていませんが、人間による環境破壊に起因するのではという説もあります。
Do you know "Crown of thorns starfish"? Some of this king-size starfish living in coral reef grow up over 50cm diameter. They feed on corals and in some cases increase explosively. Because of the damage corals, Crown of thorns starfish is considered noxious organism to prevent conservation of beautiful coral reefs. We do not know why exactly the heavy infestations of them happens yet, but this may arise from destruction of environment by our human being.

今年このオニヒトデが石垣島周辺で大発生するのではないかという憶測があり、大発生の前にできることはいうことでダイビングショップのみなさんでの駆除活動に本日行って参りました。なんとか石垣の美しいサンゴ礁を守りたいものです。
Speculation spreads that the heavy infestations may happen around Ishigaki island this year. To protect beautiful corals "clean up Crown of thorns starfish" was donducted by diving shops. We strongly hope to minimize that damage.
